Secretary of State, Elaine Marshall Visits A.B. Combs!
Our students and staff were honored to host Elaine Marshall, North Carolina Secretary of State, as Leader of the Week on Wednesday, November 4, 2009. Speaking to an audience of varied grade levels, Secretary Marshall gave an important message to students about goal setting and the general democracy process of North Carolina.
Active in North Carolina politics for over 30 years, Secretary Marshall was the first woman ever elected to a state-wide executive branch in North Carolina. She is active in many civic groups and has received numerous awards for her leadership in technology and government innovation.
While at A.B. Combs, Secretary Marshall was interview by 1st grade students as they conducted research about the democratic decision-making processes in North Carolina, as well as select 4th graders as they explained the Covey Habits to our guest. 2009 Students Against Hunger Food Drive
The Students Against Hunger is a community-based effort to help stock the shelves for those in need. It’s a great way to incorporate community service activities in our school curriculum as well as educating students about hunger in our communities.
This important event comes at a critical time the holiday season when the need for food increases. Sadly, the fight against hunger continues as there are 450,000 people at risk of hunger in our local community, and nearly 30% are children. The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina strives to provide resources for our neighbors in need in our 34 county service area. Last year, the “Students Against Hunger” Food Drive was a record-breaking success, collecting 138,095 pounds and $48,628.00. When combined, that’s nearly 322,960 meals!
Our school collected over $1,000 and over 1,600 cans of food! Each dollar collected will buy 5 cans so in total we collected about almost 7,000 cans!!!!! This year, we even were able to help stock our school’s pantry for our very own Backpack Buddies program!
We are proud of our school! CLICK HERE to see the photos!
