Spotlight on Students Spotlight on Students is a program sponsored by Wake County Public Schools to recognize students for outstanding personal achievement. Schools have the opportunity to “spotlight” one of their students during a presentation to the board of education during one of their regular meetings.
Since 1982, the WCPSS Board of Education has opened its regular monthly meeting with a special ceremony honoring selected students for outstanding achievements and accomplishments. By the end of the school year, one student from each participating school will earn the accolade of Spotlight on Students. Each student is recognized and awarded a plaque and letter from the superintendent.
A Leader in Trapshooting
Congratulations to Addison, a 5th grader in Ms. Hardee's class. Addison recently won runner up for our ten state Southern Zone (FL, GA, AL, MS, SC, NC, TN, KY, WV and VA) in the Amateur Trapshooting Association's Academics, Integrity and Marksmanship (AIM) youth program. Youths compete on team squads or as individuals in this intense competition ranging in age from 10 years through college. Addison competed as an individual. First place went to a marksman in Alabama with 95/100. Addison took second place with 90/100 and another student from Virginia was awarded third place with 84/100. Addison continually demonstrates what it means to be a leader, not only as a student at A.B. Combs, but in recreational sports as well. Congratulations Addison on your accomplishments!
Congratulations Maggie | Maggie consistently demonstrates leadership in academics and quality character. All of Maggie’s teachers notice her effort and positive attitude when it comes to her schoolwork. Maggie goes above and beyond to correct her errors and learns from those corrections. She will NOT give up until there is understanding. Maggie loves to show what she knows by teaching those who are struggling. When asked about Maggie, one teacher reported, “Maggie is one of the kindest children I have ever worked with. She is considerate, outgoing, and would never settle for doing anything less than her best work.”
| Her classmates recognize her leadership as well. Last year, they voted for Maggie to be up on the classroom Recognition Wall each time they voted! She demonstrates Covey Habits in all her interactions with fellow students. Maggie is the image of a well-rounded student because she is a perfect student, perfect friend, and perfect role model of quality character. | |
Jared is a Math Leader!

Jared competed against students from all over the state in this prestigious event where only the best math projects are showcased. Congratulations, Jared, on your ranking and on your dedication to being a leader in math at A.B. Combs!
