Chris Hahner Beginning Teacher of the Year

AB Combs' Beginning
Teacher of the Year

  Chris Hahner

Chris HahnerI attended the University of Delaware on an Air Force scholarship. I began as a nursing major but quickly switched to international relations with a focus on Asia and Latin America. I concentrated on developing countries and really enjoyed delving into other cultures. I graduated from the University of Delaware (Go Blue Hens!) with a BA in International Relations. Upon graduation, I was also commissioned into the Air Force where I spent four and a half year as an intelligence officer. Serving our country was an incredible journey with amazing opportunities that I’m extremely grateful for! While the Air Force will always be an essential component of who I am and what I value, my heart lies in the classroom. As a teacher, I knew that I could better serve my community and my family while discovering my true passion. I received a Masters degree in Elementary education this past year.

When my husband and I moved to the Raleigh area, I began looking into the local schools. I fell in love with Combs from the very beginning. I was thrilled to transition my leadership skills into such a tremendous school. I was so fortunate to student teach in third grade under the mentorship of Ms. Barbara Watkins. I am now a proud member of the fabulous first grade team here at Combs! At A.B. Combs we always begin with the end in mind. I have mapped out my own goals while depending on my colleagues to serve as experienced and supportive guides throughout my first-year journey. I could never accept the beginning teacher of the year nomination without first recognizing my peers. I am so thankful to all of the extraordinary teachers that I work with; they continue to challenge me to set the bar high, to learn from my mistakes, and to never stop searching for ways to improve my classroom, my instruction, and my communication skills.

All children deserve love, respect and the chance to learn. It is my daily goal to help every child feel like an important and successful member of our class while continuing to provide them with challenging and differentiated learning opportunities. I hope to instill creativity, compassion, teamwork, confidence, and a thirst for knowledge! Each unique student is an essential part of our journey together! It is a privilege to explore the world of learning with my students every day!
