Hundreds hit the road, walk to school 10/08/2008 08:11 AM By: Ilin Chen
RALEIGH -- Hundreds of school kids across North Carolina are hitting the pavement on Wednesday for the International Walk to School Day.
Dozens of schools in the state are taking part in the event, which is designed to promote daily physical activities for kids.
“We should have about 300 students, parents and community members joining us walking to the school,” said Jeanette Lantzy, the program coordinator for A.B. Combs Elementary School. “It’s about a mile walk, and it’s to encourage health and wellness.”
Lantzy says obesity rates are growing, and are now three times higher than they were 10-15 years ago. She says that walking to school is a step toward getting kids out and about to fight that rate.
“I think it’s a great community activity as well as something that has a good, substantial message to it,” said Lantzy.
Later Wednesday, a parent wellness session is planned with nutrition and diet experts. Watch the News 14 video RIGHT HERE
