As a leadership school, Combs families should strive to be leaders in the community in hopes that others will follow.  In an effort to strengthen our role as community leaders, the PTA would like to coordinate information sharing in order to facilitate carpooling and help us all save gas money while we care for our earth.

As part of the National PTA's Healthy Lifestyles Month celebration, the Wake County PTA Council has announced its first annual Wake County PTA Healthy Lifestyles 5K Run/Walk, on November 23 at 3:30 pm on NC States Centennial Campus.

Anyone can participate in the 5K on November 23rd, but to be eligible for prizes and for our school to get credit for participating, runners or walkers are encouraged to register.  The last day of early bird registration is this Sunday, November 9th for a fee of $20.  You can register after that, however you aren't guaranteed a t-shirt and the fee increases to $25.   We are aware of the expense and are currently seeking sponsorship for students unable to cover registration but would like to be eligible for a prize.  If you know of any student who is unable to register and could use sponsorship support, please contact any of us.

The 5K is for Wake County individuals and families, regardless of skill or experience level.  Awards will be given to the first, second and third place finishes in various age categories.  To register, visit www.PTA5K.org .  When registering for this race, please indicate that you are affiliated with Combs Elementary School, as the elementary school with the highest number of registered participants will receive money to be used towards Healthy Lifestyles programming at their school.  Let's show our Combs spirit by wearing our Combs spirit wear on the day of the event.  You can register online, or print a mail-in registration form.  Registered race participants and volunteers receive a goody bag on the day of the race and if they register by early bird registration, November 9, participants also receive a race t-shirt on race day.
 
The Health and Safety Committee at Combs will be rewarding the class with the highest participation a frozen yogurt sundae party and a tote bag filled with recess play equipment.  Additionally, the class in each grade level with the highest participation will receive a tote bag filled with recess equipment.
 
Due to the favorable response last week at our first training session, we have added two more practice sessions,  tomorrow, November 6th, Thursday  from 3:30 - 4:30 pm and Nov 17th, Monday from 3:30 - 4:30 pm.  Adult supervision is required.  Please join us and show your Combs spirit while promoting a healthy lifestyle! 7th Annual Gator Gallop

A.B. Combs PTA is holding its 7th Annual Walk-a-thon on Friday, May 1, 2009 to raise money for our Technology, Cultural Arts, and Physical Education programs. The 2009 Gator Gallop Goal is $10,000. Donors and parents are invited to watch the excitement as our participating students walk/run around our school track. CLICK HERE for more information.

The staff and PTA want to send a HUGE thank you to the Munsell's, a new Combs family that owns Jumpin' Jonny's Steaks & Subs in Brier Creek. http://www.jumpinjonnys.com/ They graciously provided a fantastic lunch and dessert for 100 of the staff on their first week back to school. They also presented the PTA with a substantial check for the Technology fund raiser. What a way to start the new school year!

PTA FUN-draisers

The Citipass Coupon Books are coming home Wednesday this week. They have fantastic deals for restaurants and businesses. If you use one or two coupons you usually have gotten your money back. Be sure to check your child's book bag. The cost is $25 per book, the PTA earns $12.50 for each one sold. If you do not want to buy one that is OK, just be sure to return it. As a bonus for every 5 books you sell you get to keep one for free! A reminder about some other FUNdraisers that don't require you to spend any extra money:

Collect and send in Box Tops for Education http://www.boxtops4education.com/earn/clip/Default.aspx shows the many products that have the box tops. We get 10cents per label and it really does add up if everyone sends in just 10 during the year that would equal over $800.

Printer ink cartridges are recyclable and the school gets money for each one turned in. So as you are printing more things at home or the office bring in your empty cartridges. Send them in to your child's teacher. A collection box will be in the office.

Link your Harris Teeter VIC shoppers card to AB Combs our school code is 1963. Last year we made almost $1400 from Harris Teeter. http://www.harristeeter.com/community/together_in_education/link_to_your_school.aspx The milk caps are no longer being accepted.

Link your Food Lion MVP card to Combs. They are updating their on line registration but you can ask at the customer service desk next time you shop at Food Lion.

Consider getting a Target Red Credit or Check Card. We earned over $1000 last year because 37 people had registered cards and shopped at Target. Our school ID is 81058 https://redcard.target.com/redcard/rc_main.jsp.
