School Traditions

Celebrate Success

Celebrate Success Assemblies

Celebrate Success Assemblies are special assemblies held at the end of every quarter after report cards go home and are designed to spotlight the achievements of our students.  Children at all grade levels are recognized for academic achievement, meeting their personal and academic goals, and outstanding performance in special classes (Art, Music, PE, etc.).  Character Education awards are also given to deserving students.  Parents and guardians are invited to attend this very special event which begins with a short grade level assembly and ends with classroom time.

Field Day

Field Day

A day full of physical education activities, students look forward to Field Day every year!  Held in the spring, this fun-filled day encourages teamwork, skill, and sportsmanship.  Activities of the day involve games or skills that have been taught throughout the year in physical education classes.  Game on!

Science Fair

 Science Fair

Every year in February, our leaders in science are showcased at A.B. Combs!  Students submit science fair projects, which are judged based on outlined criteria.  While participation is encouraged from students at all grade levels, students in grades 3-5 are required to participate.  Historically, two-thirds of all Combs students have submitted projects!  Students in grades K-2 receive written praise, suggestions from judges, and a participation ribbon.  Third through fifth graders compete for 1st -3rd place and “Best of Show.”

Children’s Chat

 Children’s Chat

Children’s Chat is a time when student representatives from all grade levels can meet with school administration to discuss student issues and concerns.  This forum is designed to allow students the opportunity to provide the administration with feedback and ideas, as well as provide students with the power of defining the school’s core values.  This is one of the ways students are empowered to become leaders at A.B. Combs!

Leader of the Week Assemblies

 Leader of the Week Assemblies

Leader of the Week Assemblies are a time for our students to interview and learn more about a local business or community leader.  Students research the leader’s job and then practice their interview skills by asking the leader questions centered around the Covey Habits and Baldrige practices.  Students are always eager to participate in a Leader of the Week interview!

International Festiva

 The International Festival

The International Festival is a day of celebration in April embracing the diversity in our school that makes us so special and unique.  Students perform cultural entertainment from their native country.  This event is one of the highlights of our school year!

Leadership Day

 Leadership Day

Twice a year (in the fall and spring) educators from all over the world come to learn about our school.  Students greet our guests, present flags from countries that are represented at A.B. Combs, give speeches, showcase their talents, present data notebooks, and share their experiences.  The visiting educators learn from our students and staff what makes our leadership model so special.

Inaugual Ball

The A.B. Combs Inaugural Ball

In the fall, students elect their own President and representatives from fifth grade, forming the A.B. Combs Leadership Cabinet.   Following these elections, we host an Inaugural Ball to celebrate our student leaders.  This ball models the actual Presidential Inaugural Ball.  At the ball, our President is sworn in and students perform dances learned in physical education classes.  The parents and students always enjoy this evening of celebration and dancing!

Walk to School Day

International Walk to School Day

International Walk to School Day is an event held every year in October in conjunction with Safe Routes – The National Center for Safe Routes to School. A.B. Combs’ students, staff, parents, and community members participate in a one mile walk to school in an effort to promote physical fitness, pedestrian safety, and conservation. The caravan meets at Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church at 7:45am. The walk proceeds down Kaplan Drive, to Merwin Road, and concludes on the school grounds with presentations by the Combs Choir, guest speakers, visiting ROTC, and more.  What a great way to celebrate safety and fitness!

Grandgator Day

Grandgator Day

Grand Gator Day is a special day held annually in September. This day is to honor A.B. Combs' grandparents and/or any special "Grand" friends in the lives of our students. "Grand Gators" are invited to eat lunch with students in our dining hall on that day.  It’s always a special day when we can include our family and friends in our school routines!
